Questions, answered plainly.

Everything people ask before they install Mono — and a few things they ask after.

The basics

What is Mono Translate Pro?

A Chrome extension that shows the original YouTube subtitle and a translation together, right on the video. With Professional Translation it reads the scene around each line, so the translation sounds natural and stays consistent from start to finish. When you want to learn from a video, Mono Workspace keeps the lines you save.

Which languages does it support?

27 languages, in any direction: English, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, Malay, Filipino, Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Czech, Romanian, German, Dutch, Swedish, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.

Does it work on every YouTube video?

It works on videos that have captions — either subtitles the creator uploaded or YouTube's automatic captions. Mono picks the best source by itself. The cleaner the original captions, the better the translation.

Professional Translation

What makes Professional Translation different?

Instead of translating each subtitle on its own, Mono first reads a stretch of the conversation. It works out who is speaking, how they address each other, what kind of video it is and which names or terms keep coming back. Then it translates — so jokes land, sentences split across two subtitles read as one, and a character who says “you” casually doesn't suddenly turn formal.

Why is Professional Translation part of Pro?

Because it is the part of Mono that takes real work to build and keep improving: reading context, keeping names and forms of address consistent, adapting to each genre and each of the 27 languages, and handling long videos without stopping. Pro funds that work. The translation itself runs on your own free Gemini key, so you are never paying per minute.

Fast or Professional — which should I use?

Use Professional whenever you want to really follow a show, an interview or a lesson — it is the recommended mode. Use Fast when you only need the gist right away: it runs instantly in Chrome and needs no key, but it translates line by line.

Will it get names and forms of address right?

That is exactly what it is built for. Mono notes the speakers, how they refer to each other and the recurring names and terms, then keeps them consistent for the whole video. It is still a machine translation, so an occasional line can miss — and the quality of the original captions matters a lot.

Your Gemini key

Is the Gemini API key really free?

Yes. You create it yourself in Google AI Studio with your Google account, and the free tier needs no credit card. Google gives each key a daily free allowance, which is enough for a lot of viewing. Google decides those limits and can change them.

Do I have to enter the key every time?

No. Paste it once and Mono saves it in your Chrome profile. After that it reconnects by itself — after a restart, the next day, whenever you open YouTube.

What happens when I hit Google's daily limit?

Each Gemini model has its own allowance. When one model runs out, Mono switches to the next available model automatically and keeps translating. If every model is used up for the day, Mono tells you clearly and continues once Google resets the allowance.

Is my key safe?

Your key stays in your own Chrome profile and is only sent to Google to run your translations. Mono's servers never need it, and you can remove it at any time.

Look and feel

Can I change how the subtitles look?

Completely. For the original and the translation separately, you can choose the font, size, weight, colour, outline, shadow and background, where the lines sit on the screen, and how each new line appears. The goal is subtitles that look like they were finished in a video editor — not text pasted on top.

Can I control Mono without leaving the video?

Yes. The Player Dock sits next to YouTube's own buttons. From there you can translate, change the language, choose which lines are shown, resize them and move them — even in full screen.

Is there a dark mode?

The extension and this website both follow your system's light or dark setting, and you can set either one yourself. The side panel was designed to feel at home on macOS and Windows alike.

Learning with Mono

What is Mono Workspace?

A learning map for the videos you watch. Flow helps you understand with just enough support, Echo helps you remember by recalling and replaying the real voice, and Connect helps you use a phrase in your own sentences. Everything stays linked to the original moment in the video.

Can I learn English with YouTube this way?

Yes — it is one of the most common reasons people use Mono. Watch with both lines, save the phrases you want, then practise listening and speaking with the real speaker's voice in Mono Workspace.

Plans and billing

Is there a free trial?

Yes. New accounts get every Pro feature free for 3 days — no card needed.

Monthly or annual — what's the difference?

Same features. Monthly is $8 a month. Annual is $59 a year, which works out to $4.92 a month and saves you $37 compared with paying monthly. Prices are in USD.

Can I cancel?

Anytime. Turn off renewal from your account page and Pro stays active until the end of the period you paid for.

Where can I read the refund policy?

On the Refunds page, before you subscribe.
